Manufacturing Steel Frame Alterations

Feb 2024

**The Challenge**

The column of an existing steel frame (supporting plant) will potentially clash with future installations of concrete service trenches. The Client brief was to carry out a measured survey of the frame, and then analyse the structure with a view to modifying or replacing it.

**Our Approach**

  • Accurately measure the existing structural members, translate dimensions onto AutoCAD, carry out a thorough analysis and design of a modified frame, finally provide recommendations to the client.
  • With no access to original frame design information, reverse calculations were carried out to obtain capacities of existing members. Moment distribution calculations then gave me the required information to determine that, after relocating the column in question, the platform beams could safely cantilever.
  • After meeting client & representatives on site, emails were sent requesting CAD files of proposed plant and any existing Chopper Fan data sheets.

 **The Solution**

  • Having established what loads the frame was designed for, I determined the maximum lengths of cantilevers that could safely carry the platform supporting beams.
  • New columns were introduced away from service trenches.
  • Bracing was also modified to suit better access beneath the frame.

Cost savings, and less disruption to the production line - new frame not required!

N

Improved safety from ease of circulation now column relocated.

N

Full access beneath the frame to other areas of the factory.
